Paul Winter Concert, November 2013

pw On Friday, November 15th, 2014, the Granby Education Foundation (GEF) brought Grammy Award-winner Paul Winter to town.  In the morning, Mr. Winter presented his “Adventures in Sound Play” workshop to students at the Granby Memorial High School.  Through exercises in improvisation, or “noodling” as Mr. Winter prefers to call it, the students tapped their creativity.  While experimenting with a range of sounds, both vocal and instrumental, the students learned the importance of spontaneous expression and deep listening, both of which are required to create music.

In the evening, Paul Winter and pianist Jeff Holmes performed in concert for the community, sharing Mr. Winter’s vision of music which celebrates the creatures and cultures of the whole earth.  His unique genre of “earth music” interweaves the voices of the greater symphony of the wild with instrumental voices from classical, jazz, and world music traditions.  The extraordinary talents of these two musicians provided an engaging and inspiring experience for audience members.  Following the performance, a complimentary reception was offered at which concert-goers were able to meet Mr. Winter in person.

The GEF would like to thank our event sponsors and community partners:  Windsor Federal Savings, Lost Acres Orchard, Peppermill Deli and Bakery, Granby Pharmacy, Granby Land Trust, and the Granby Public Schools.  Through events such as this, the GEF strives to fulfil the mission of its Arts Endowment by supporting artistic programming which exposes multiple generations of our community to exemplary works of art.

Paul Winter has spent a lifetime exploring the music of the world. From his college days as the leader of a jazz sextet to his later work with the Paul Winter Consort, the saxophonist and composer has aspired to bridge the cultures of the world through music.
